MABC Appoints New Executive Director

The MABC Board of Directors is pleased to announce the appointment of Sylvia Skene to the position of executive director, effective August 2. Sylvia is looking forward to tackling the wide variety of challenges in the coming months and years, meeting the members, and discovering a new field and new people who appreciate her sense of humour.

In her last position at the Advanced Education Media Acquisitions Centre (AEMAC) at Langara College, Sylvia was responsible for updating two web sites and an online distributors’ database, CANDI, which assisted buyers; organizing projects and supervising practicum workers, students and her supervisors; and tracking and reconciling the budget, among many other duties.

Sylvia was involved in the Fast Forward Media Showcase for 15 years in a multiplicity of roles, finally as the chair in 2009. She was also an occasional guest lecturer, presenter and instructional support technician for the Library Technician program at the college. She also sat on the Langara College Board of Governors from 1998 to 2001, and Langara Council from 1996 to 1998.

After her board term ended, Sylvia started the B.C. Post-Secondary Support Staff Conference in 2002 to bring together staff from a diversity of institutions. She won a library support staff award for this in 2003 from the Council on Library/Media Technicians (COLT) and Library Mosaics magazine, as well as for her efforts helping to revitalize the B.C. Library Technicians’ and Assistants’ Interest Group, and for her editorials, reviews and columns.

These days, Sylvia volunteers as part of the team of "Beautiful Minds," a show that focuses on de-stigmatizing mental illness, on Vancouver Co-op Radio. She also volunteers for Art for Life, an auction that is a major source of revenue for Friends for Life, a charity that supports people with life-threatening illnesses and their families.

On a personal note, Sylvia spends a lot of time on the grammar, spelling, content and flow in her emails to friends and family, and wants to bike, hike, read, write, sail, and cook more, and drink coffee less.

Feel free to contact Sylvia at exec@magsbc.com or the MABC office at 604-688-1175 and let her know what’s up with your magazine. Emails sent to projects@magsbc.com and info@magsbc.com will continue to be forwarded to Sylvia.
