About La Scena Musicale
La Scena Musicale is a free bi-monthly magazine published in English and French by La Scène musicale/The Music Scene, a non-profit charity dedicated to the promotion of classical music. Each issue contains a comprehensive calendar of concerts, compact disc reviews, interviews with musicians as well as feature articles on the local, national and international classical music scenes.
The printed version of La Scena Musicale is distributed across Canada with particular emphasis in the Montreal, Toronto, Quebec City, and Ottawa-Hull regions. In 2024-25, four issues will be distributed in Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary. The electronic version is available world-wide on the internet.
Internship
La Scena Musicale, Canada’s most widely distributed magazine covering classical music, jazz and world music wishes to share the expertise of its editorial and design team with an enthusiastic intern interested in magazine journalism. We offer a work experience that would include writing assignments (interviews, company profiles, reviews), digital publishing (editing and formatting articles for online publication) as well as participation (depending on experience) in initiatives like our Singing Valentines and Mother’s Day video performances. The internship would offer meaningful assignments intrinsic to the running of a busy, seven annual print issue and digital magazine.
Key Responsibilities
In this position, you will:
- Research and write content for publication in the print magazine and on our website
- Edit and proofread content produced by a wide variety of writers
- Regularly update La Scena Musicale’s website, by posting news items and online calendar events
- Promote our content by posting daily on social media [Facebook, Twitter, Instagram]
- Other tasks depending on your experience and interests
Skills, Competencies and Qualifications
- Post-secondary education or related experience in journalism, digital publishing or a similar field.
- Demonstrated writing skills.
- Listening and speaking skills; aptitude for conducting interviews over the phone or by video conference.
- High attention to detail and focus on accuracy.
- Strong time-management skills; ability to work to deadline.
- Ability to work remotely from a home office
- Curiosity, willingness to learn and an interest in classical music
- Familiarity with the business applications of social media platforms, especially Facebook, X, and Instagram.
- Experience with or a basic understanding of the following would be an advantage: Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat Pro, WordPress and the Apple operating system.
