We’re hiring! EDITORIAL ASSISTANT
Position: Part-time, 20 hours per week, July 13-Dec 18, 2026 (22 weeks)
Location: Montreal, work-from-home
Compensation: $19/hour

Mentor: Wah Keung Chan, Founder and Publisher/Editor

La Scena Musicale, Canada’s most widely distributed magazine covering classical music, jazz and world music wishes to share the expertise of its editorial and design team with an enthusiastic intern interested in magazine journalism. We offer a work experience that would include writing assignments (interviews, company profiles, reviews) and digital publishing (editing and formatting articles and press releases for online publication). The internship would offer meaningful assignments intrinsic to the running of a busy, seven annual print issue and digital magazine.
The intern would work under the supervision of Assistant Editor Gianmarco Segato, former Editorial Director of Opera Canada where he supervised a number of paid internships under a similar program. He was also a mentor in the Emerging Arts Critics Program, a joint effort of the Canadian Opera Company, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, National Ballet of Canada and Soulpepper Theatre. Segato also successfully mentored many undergraduate and graduate interns from Toronto Metropolitan University (Ryerson)’s journalism program. Mentorship would be under La Scena Musicale’s founder and publisher/editor, Wah Keung Chan who has successfully overseen the growth of the magazine for 30 years.
About the Company
La Scena Musicale is a free bi-monthly magazine published in English and French by La Scène musicale/The Music Scene, a non-profit charity dedicated to the promotion of classical music. Each issue contains a comprehensive calendar of concerts, compact disc reviews, interviews with musicians as well as feature articles on the local, national and international classical music scenes.
The printed version of La Scena Musicale is distributed across Canada with particular emphasis in the Montreal, Toronto, Quebec City, and Ottawa-Hull regions. In 2025-26, four issues will also be distributed in Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary. The electronic version is available world-wide on the internet.
Internship
La Scena Musicale seeks a paid editorial intern for a 22-week term from 13/07/2026 to 18/12/2026. This part-time (20 hours per week), contract position is an opportunity to gain invaluable experience in the magazine industry, expand your network of contacts and develop your skills through on-the-job training. Applicants must be a resident of BC, and either be a current student or have graduated less than 3 years ago from an accredited post-secondary institution.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
In this position, you will:
- Research and write content for publication in the print magazine and on our website including interviews, company profiles and reviews depending on experience
- Edit and proofread content produced by a wide variety of writers
- Regularly update La Scena Musicale’s website, by posting news items, press releases and online calendar events
- Promote our content by posting daily on social media [Facebook, Instagram]
- Other tasks depending on your experience and interests
SKILLS, COMPETENCIES AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Post-secondary education or related experience in journalism, digital publishing or a similar field.
- Demonstrated writing skills.
- Listening and speaking skills; aptitude for conducting interviews over the phone or by video conference.
- High attention to detail and focus on accuracy.
- Strong time-management skills; ability to work to deadline.
- Ability to work remotely from a home office
- Curiosity, willingness to learn and an interest in classical music and jazz
- Familiarity with the business applications of social media platforms, especially Facebook.and Instagram.
- Experience with or a basic understanding of the following would be an advantage: Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite, Adobe Acrobat Pro, WordPress and the Apple operating system.

$19 per hour [20-hour work week; 22 weeks]; opportunities to attend professional development seminars and industry events during the internship; press tickets to select performances; networking opportunities with other writers, our editorial, design, circulation and administrative staff; a work-from-home position with regular daily meetings with your supervisor and weekly staff meetings.
