The Editor Intern is a temporary part-time 100% remote position, 20 hours/week for 18 weeks, beginning on or around October 21. Compensation is $21/hour. The position is hosted by WordWorks Magazine, published by the Federation of BC Writers (FBCW).
About WordWorks
WordWorks is a 28-page full-colour magazine, published three times per year, with a print circulation run of 2,700 copies. Featuring a different theme with each issue, the magazine is dedicated to publishing excellent articles aiding writers in all genres, at all stages of their writing careers, in every part of BC and the Yukon.
The print magazine is distributed to FBCW members and community hubs throughout BC and the Yukon, with 500 going to libraries, 500 to coffee shops and hundreds dropped off to bookstores, senior centres, and other community spaces. Each issue is packed with insightful articles and many are collected for future reference and as resources, extending each issue’s shelf life and advertising exposure by months and even years. In addition to the print edition, we publish digital versions of the magazine, circulated to approximately 4,000 subscribers.
About the Federation of BC Writers
The Federation of BC Writers is a Canadian charity that seeks to promote excellence and professionalism in the literary arts. We support and promote writers of all genres at all levels of their craft, with the goal of uplifting the status of literary arts by encouraging publication. We provide education and training through workshops and webinars, seminars and writing intensives. We work with both emerging and established writers to help them flourish in their chosen vocations and we encourage and support young emerging writers across British Columbia.
Job Responsibilities
The Editor Intern will help produce a special edition of WordWorks magazine, a “best-of” issue, participating in all facets of the publication of the periodical, to be published in spring 2025. Specifically, the Editor Intern, assisted by a mentor, supervisor and other team members as required, will:
● curate a selection of previously published articles
● highlight key article terms and themes to identify gaps and opportunities for future issues and updates to website categorization of articles
● undertake editorial activities including writing, editing, proofreading
● participate in decision-making regarding art direction, layout
● assist with advertising sales, magazine circulation, and participate in other tasks as appropriate.
Qualifications
● Education in English, Journalism or a related field
● Strong writing, editing and proofreading skills
● Understanding of the process of magazine publication
● Excellent organizational, time management, and communication skills
● Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
● Basic knowledge of design software (ex., Adobe Creative Suite)
● Willingness to Learn: Open to feedback and a desire to improve editing skills
● Ability to work with a team, but also independently
● Portfolio of writing or editing samples (if available) to demonstrate skills.
Eligibility
● The applicant must be enrolled in or a recent graduate (within 3 years) of a program related to the job at an accredited post-secondary institution.
● The applicant must be available to complete the entire internship.
Accountability
The Editor Intern will receive mentorship of a minimum of .5 hr per week from the Managing Editor of the FBCW Press. They will be supervised by the Executive Director of the FBCW.
