EVENT is hiring a Magazine Intern for Summer 2026

Hours: Part-time, 10 hours per week for 20 weeks

Location: Hybrid, some remote work, some in-person work

Compensation: $22/hour plus 4% vacation pay

Accountability: Report to Krista Eide, Managing Editor and Shashi Bhat, Editor

Overview

EVENT magazine is seeking an intern to begin in May 2026. The successful intern will gain insight into how small magazines function, growing skills in multiple facets of magazine publishing. The intern will assist with social media and other forms of promotion, with implementing a fundraising campaign, and with organizing an issue launch. There may also be other opportunities depending on interest and experience.

Qualifications

  • Must be enrolled in or a recent graduate (within 3 years) of journalism, publishing, professional writing, digital publishing, communications, design, business, marketing, advertising or a comparable program in an accredited post-secondary institution
  • Excellent grammar and English language communication skills, including verbal and written
  • A passion for contemporary literature and an understanding of the role of small literary magazines in fostering new and emerging writers
  • A working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat, etc. Basic working knowledge of Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and WordPress would be an asset
  • Intermediate skills in using social media, including Instagram and Facebook
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work well independently
  • Research savvy
  • Experience in event planning, design, marketing, copy editing, and/or fundraising are all considered assets

Responsibilities may include:

  • Promoting EVENT’s annual Non-Fiction Contest through social media, including Instagram and Facebook
  • Assisting with organizing and implementing a fundraising campaign
  • Assisting with planning a launch event for EVENT’s spring/summer issue
  • Researching potential advertisers
  • Assisting with preparing and sending out EVENT’s monthly e-newsletter
  • Attending editorial meetings and staffing at literary events as necessary
  • Other administrative assistance as required

 

Compensation: $22 per hour plus 4% vacation pay, paid biweekly for 20 weeks, to a maximum of 200 hours for the duration of the internship.

Location: The position will be hybrid, with some work performed remotely and some work performed in person. EVENT is located at Douglas College, Room 2622, 700 Royal Ave, New Westminster, BC V3M 5Z5. The college is one block north of the New Westminster SkyTrain Station.

Hours: The intern will work 10 hours per week. The term will commence in the week of May 4, 2026, and end the week of September 18, 2026.

Other Benefits: This role will give the intern a full overview of all facets of running a small magazine, including editorial and production processes, as well as promotion and marketing. Other aspects may be explored to various levels depending on the individual’s interests and abilities. The intern is expected to leave with the knowledge and experience required to obtain at least an entry-level job in the publishing industry.

Accountability: The intern will report to Krista Eide, Managing Editor and Shashi Bhat, Editor.
