We are better together!

Magazines bearing the MagsBC logo in their masthead signal to readers that their publication is part of a network of periodicals that can be trusted to meet stringent editorial and advertising criteria established by the Canadian magazine industry.

MagsBC advocates at the municipal, provincial and federal levels on behalf of BC magazine publishers and creators. We consider the unique needs of our members when we lobby governments to provide the resources necessary for a stable and growing magazine industry in BC. We strongly believe that magazine creators deserve the opportunity to grow, to innovate and to contribute to the cultural economy of BC and Canada.

Skill sharing is essential to driving the magazine industry forward. When experts and up-and-comers get together to exchange ideas and share experiences, the whole industry benefits. MagsBC leads cornerstone projects and events to stimulate discussion and knowledge sharing among magazine professionals.

MAGSWEST

This annual learning and networking conference for magazine people is the only large-scale gathering of its kind in British Columbia. Keynote speakers and creative industry leaders host two days of talks, workshops and labs, for all facets of magazine publishing. This event connects the whole chain of magazine makers—from publisher to poet, student to sales team, printer to distributor—and is capped off with a fun reception on the last evening.

WORKSHOPS AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

MagsBC will be offering professional development sessions and workshops during spring and summer of 2018 to 2020 to complement our annual conference.

LEARNING TOOLS

MagsBC members have full access to our library of videos and documents on magazine publishing resources. Our members also receive access to the resource libraries of Magazines Canada and the Alberta Magazine Publishers Association, which are not available to the general public. These libraries offer a wealth of resources on everything to do with magazine publishing: circulation, marketing, advertising, management, production, funding opportunities, awards, printing, copyright, going green, and many other topics.

EVENT DISCOUNTS

MagsBC members receive discounted rates for our events, as well as for select events hosted by partner organizations, including Magazines Canada, the Alberta Magazine Publishers Association and WORD Vancouver.

MagsBC member magazines may apply to Creative BC for up to 50% of costs to attend domestic and international conferences, events, meetings and other promotional and professional development opportunities.

For more information, please see this news item and visit the Creative BC program webpage.

Through the Magazine Coach Program (introduced in 2018), MagsBC will pair experts in a particular area—branding, budgeting, editorial or any other field—to meet with member magazines for a half or a full day consultation at their offices. These are hands-on, practical sessions and each member receives a summary of recommendations afterward.

This program is modeled after the very successful Magazines Canada’s Travelling Consultants Program and the Alberta Magazine Publishers Association’s Pros on the Road.

For more information, please visit our Magazine Coach webpage.

Since at least 2010, MagsBC has subsidized many internships at a variety of magazines, making it easier for publishers and small teams to bring in new talent, get some much-needed support for their operations, and help develop the next generation of creators.

For more information, please visit our internship subsidy program page.

We look for opportunities to raise the profile of BC magazines by getting them into the hands of as many readers as we can. In addition to various marketing campaigns throughout the year, we display member magazines at strategic venues and events and distribute back issues at community locations, including *Vancouver General Hospital, Creative BC, BC Legislature (BC Book Day, Creative Industries Week) and WORD Vancouver.

*Donated magazines can be deposited in the drop-off bin located behind the former parking kiosk at 11th Avenue and Heather Street.

MagsBC members are entitled to membership in the Canadian Media Circulation Audit (CMCA), providing a reduced rate to access the CMCA’s auditing services. (Note: Auditing fees are additional and based on circulation.)

Literary magazines that are members of MagsBC may join the Community of Literary Magazines and Presses (CLMP) at a 20% discount ($100 USD rather than $125 USD for magazines with a budget of less than $50,000 USD) and have access to the CLMP's Filemaker Pro circulation template at a discount ($99 USD for CLMP members rather than $220 USD).
